Bumps in life always reveal what we are made of. Many times what emerges from us as a result of difficult circumstances very well can reveal where God is wanting to shape us most. All events in life have their Sovereign design in them.
I think it is uncanny that in "My Utmost For His Highest" devotional book by Oswald Chambers, September 10-12 speaks to this in a profound and personal way at this time in our nation and corporately. Check it out; you'll be challenged.
Reading "My Utmost..." has probably had the greatest impact on my life, that is, second to the Word Of God. If you don't use it, consider making it a part of your devotional life.
