Tears...

We cry for all sorts of reasons. When we're happy, sad, frustrated, angry, scared...when we're in pain or we see someone else in pain. Though the chemical composition of those tears is the same, their meaning is not.

The tears that come to our eyes when we drop a can of beans on our foot are different from the tears that come to our eyes when we look at an old photograph and remember someone we love. Those tears are different from the ones that come to our eyes when we jump to our feet when the home team comes from behind to score the winning touchdown.

Tears are the language of the soul, and like any language, the meaning is determined by the context in which they come. They take us back in time to "places" that need healing, forgiving, understanding or grateful remembrance.

Though more difficult to define, tears are more expressive than words and more difficult to hide behind than words. What we weep over reveals who we are. Our tears pull back the curtain to reveal the identity of our true self, which is often held from other people.

Tears not only reveal our true self, they renew our soul, they restore us to one another, and sometimes, in a watershed moment, they even redirect the course of our life. Such is the power of tears...

And sometimes that power is harnessed by God as a moment of revelation...about us, about other people and even about God Himself.

I've been taking the last few blogs from "Reflections on Your Life" by Ken Gire. ...A great read for reflective moments.

Blessings,
