Advent Means "Coming"

I've long been a fan of Richard C. Halverson, past Chaplain of the Senate. His publication, "The PERSPECTIVE", printed these thoughts, Christmas of 1997.

Advent means coming. It's a time to reflect on the coming of God to man.

Traditionally Advent commemorates two of God's appearances:

First Advent, which looks to the past, to God's coming as a humble Savior. And Second Advent, which looks to the future, to God's coming as a triumphant Lord.

There is yet another advent to celebrate - when God comes to you personally.

Has God come to reside in your body, His living temple?

Yes, we must seek Him. But God is so far beyond us that we can't find Him, unless He takes the initiative.

Those who testify: "I found God," should first say, "God found me!"

That's where Jesus comes in. Jesus is the only one known among men who has come to seek and save the lost.

If we have a problem with this statement, we may be spurning God's best way of getting through to us.

The first step God takes in your direction is to send the message you just read - that Jesus is God's way of coming to you.

If you are hearing these words without reacting against them, it means that God is at your doorstep!

Don't fight it. Don't complicate it. Just open the door.

You are about to be found!

Behold I stand at the door, and knock; If any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with Him, and he with me. (Revelation 3:20)

Merry Christmas!
